TLC has this new show called “For Better or for Worse” — I was watching in last night and thinking “If all those girls with big wedding stories would hear about my wedding budget, they would laugh at me and find it totally ridiculous”.
It was passed to me from my mom: Keep it simple!. The Wedding Planner on the show said that she didn’t know how she was going to pull it off with ONLY 5.000 dollars and I was laughing. With 5.000 dollars in Colombia you can do wonders in a wedding; in fact I think that was what my uncle spent on my cousin’s weddings at one of the most elegant hotels in Bogota. But anyway, big weddings… Not my thing. I would spend those 5.000 dollars in something much better than feeding a crowd of people, ha ha! And don’t get me started with the issue about a dress you’re going to wear ONCE in your life, because chances are… if you get married again, you would want another dress.
You might call me weird, but that cliché about “every girl dreaming about her wedding day and the dress, and the party and blah blah blah”?? — Sorry, I guess I’m not a girl because it was never important for me? Hello!? Maybe because I grew up looking at the photos of my parents wedding that was as simple as you can imagine, yet my mom was one of the most beautiful brides I’ve ever seen. And my own wedding, well… see it for yourself. I wanted to get married quietly and very early in the church on front of my house and then go and have breakfast with my family and my closest friends, that was it. We ended up having a little family reunion at home and there weren’t more than 40 people in my house.
I don’t know, I guess I’m to down to earth and that spoils the fun. But I’ve never understood and will never understand what is all this fuss about spending thousands on dollars on one single day. It’s a personal position, and I have to admit that sometimes I think “Darn, I should get married again -to Patrice, of course!- and have a fancy wedding, just to see how it goes”. But it’s SO NOT me. I’ve seen marriages from fancy weddings going to the pooper so soon that it gives me creeps to see so much money wasted sometimes.
Hysterical brides — No thank you, not for me. Most of the time weddings become a contest, a matter of fashion. Someone even told me that a girl had told her something like “Well, your parents would want to impress their friends”. WTH?? — Sure, if you want a big wedding, have fun, you probably deserve it. But I just don’t get it.
And for my friends who either had or are planning a big fancy wedding, good luck! I like hearing about your stories and plans. This is just a personal point of view.
