Excellent! Ahora a esperar con paciencia. :)

Fast forward, please.

This has been a very stressful day. Whenever there are things from my past I have to dwell on, in order to plan for the future, I feel like I’m taking a step back in the recovery process; it makes me nauseous. Between dealing with difficult people, seeing how nasty some human beings can be, and the imprudence of certain individuals, I much prefer to be able to be oblivious of the outside world.

Right now I just want to relax, chat with my cousin in Colombia, and look at family pictures while a yummy beef stew simmers on the stove. Then there’s American Idol, and hopefully I’ll be cuddling with my sweetheart in front of the TV. The sun will come out tomorrow… Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow… There’ll be sun!

Climate change isn’t a joke

One of my current pet peeves is when someone tells me that the global warming debate is a load of crap; or that people who are talking about it are being extremists with some kind of agenda. I’ve found a new admiration for Al Gore who’s bringing this issue to the masses, I would admire him even if he wasn’t such a famous politician.

Some people out there claim global warming is a joke when temperatures reach very low levels or there is too much snow on the ground. Hello! That is a sign of global warming, a severely damaged atmosphere, the cause of floods, stronger than ever hurricanes and all those meteorological phenomena that makes us go “Wow!” — And while global warming isn’t new because it’s been studied that climate change has been responsible for the disappearance of species and civilizations in the past, in the present day we ARE responsible for making this climate change happen faster.

I am not a meteorologist or a scholar who’s an expert on global warming. I’m just a normal citizen of the world, concerned by the ignorance and the closed-mind of some people who think this issue is another political agenda. Maybe they should read more articles like The Curse of Akkad, where climate change is explained in simple words, and where anyone can see that this isn’t just another urban legend.

Science Vulgarized

The pieces I like to read the most about science, are the ones whose author is capable of vulgarizing to the point where even a kid is able to understand. Science is mystifying, and personally I’m more interested in the “how’s” than in the “why’s” — That’s what scientists do, try to analyze how things happen in order to measure the impact they have. Probably that’s why I decided to study Biology, and even if I’m not strong in areas like Chemistry and Physics, they are just as amazing, for they are interrelated.

I just happened to get my hands on this little gem from the library: “The Best American Science Writing” — With different scientific articles vulgarized at their best, and quite interesting. I’ve read 3 of the 21 and I’ve enjoyed them very much. This is the book for 2006, but I’m going to be searching for past issues. My admiration for scientists who write for “normal” people grows more and more everyday. Who said science is available to scholars only?

I need a project

Casting on: Check
Knit: Check
Purl: Check
Bind: Check
Increase: Check
Decrease: Check
Cable: Check
Gauge: Check

OK. The basics are taken care of. Now I need a project. It’s either knitting something for me, like a scarf (since it looks rather easy), or starting a blanket for my boyfriend’s niece, expected to land on planet earth in a few months. I guess I’ll need more than that to keep myself entertained.
