The Truth About Facebook Groups

I am one of those people who have joined more than 50 groups on Facebook. Why do I do it, people may wonder… Well, I have come to the conclusion some of us join these groups in order to make a statement. When I join an anti Hugo Chávez group, or an anti-guerrilla group, I’m making my political statement and joining a force of people who want their voices to be heard because there is political and social injustice.

What’s the outcome of it all? I have no idea. What change will it represent? I have no idea. But somehow it feels good when you know you’re not the only one who believes in something. The sense of belonging to the world in a collective train of thought is what we need sometimes to know that we’re definitely not alone.

And while there is always the stupid group with no real purpose, there are hundreds of them with a goal. It is to educate, to create awareness. So, if you see me on Facebook joining a group, it’s probably because I truly believe in what they state.

Overdue Post

I apologize for the lack of updates. I don’t know how many people are reading this weblog, but since I joined NaBloPoMo, I feel a bit guilty for not having kept my word. I’ve been really busy since Thanksgiving, outside running errands, and mostly offline.

Come December, my husband and I will settle home to spend the holidays in Kansas City, and I hope to have more time to post and read Diabetes related weblogs.

Healthy Eyes

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the retina caused by complications of diabetes, which could eventually lead to blindness. It is an ocular manifestation of systemic disease which affects up to 80% of all diabetics who have had diabetes for 15 years or more. Despite these intimidating statistics, research indicates that at least 90% of these new cases could be reduced if there was proper and vigilant treatment and monitoring of the eyes.

I got a clean bill today after my dilated eye exam. My doctor told me that if she didn’t know I was diabetic, she wouldn’t have guessed. The blood vessels in my retina look very healthy, and I got to see the photo they took. The flash wasn’t nice at first, but once I took a look at the result, I couldn’t be more pleased. She only changed my prescription (which is very low) to help my eyes a little.

Check your eyes at least once a year. It doesn’t take long, and it will allow you to keep enjoying the world.

All I want for Christmas is a Wii

Well, not really. We already have one. But it seems like the Wii is coveted by many, and not easy to get. A year after its launch, the small video game console sells out almost immediately when it reaches stores, even after Nintendo Co. has ramped up production several times.

And it is a really fun toy. I actually don’t spend a lot of time in front of it (because I’m too addicted to my DS), but it’s guaranteed that you are going to have a good time once you touch those controllers. You can do anything you can imagine with the Wii, that’s the beauty of it.

So, what are you getting this Christmas? A Wii, right? ;-)
