Published by Bea under Memes

Today’s Friday’s Feast brought to you by Facebook.

Appetizer
Who was the last person you hugged?
That would be my hubby. Right after I told him “You are my family!” We were watching Jericho, and one of the characters said that to her fiancé. :D

Soup
Share a beauty or grooming trick or tip with us.
Hmmm… Avocado on your hair to moisturize, I guess. It works!

Salad
What does the color yellow make you think of?
The first thing that came to my mind was the sun.

Main Course
If you were to make your living as a photographer, what subject would your pictures revolve around?
I would take photos of people when they are not looking. Photos of day to day scenes, everything ordinary.

Dessert
What was the longest book you ever read?
I think it was “Gone With the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell back when I was in HS. My friends kept asking if I was reading The Bible.

A New Earth

Published by Bea under Life, Media

I’m all about self-improvement lately. From reading books to following weblogs, keeping good routines, and even joining Oprah.com to follow the webcasts about Eckhart Tolle’s book “A New Earth - Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” - Yes, I said Oprah. Yes, I watched the specific show where she mentioned this book, and she had three panelists discussing positive thinking, self-confidence and the law of attraction. It was a godsend, and I thank my husband for making me sit on the couch that night to watch TV (not my favourite thing to do, if I may say).

The classes start on Monday and I’m getting ready to attend the first one. I printed out the first chapter workbook and I have a composition notebook ready to write down notes. I also requested to join a local book club to discuss “A New Earth” and I hope to hear from the leader very soon. I’m excited… So excited I’m actually anxious. I have to calm down. This is not college, this is self-improvement.

My life went from stand-by to full-speed. With a job hunt coming, joining the American work force, my permanent U.S. residence allowing me to do a lot of things I couldn’t “just” as a Canadian, planning to get a new car… The list is endless and it’s also encouraging. And I get to share it with someone who believes in me, my husband.

I’ve been putting myself down for years, thinking (or letting others make me think) that I haven’t reached my full potential. It’s time for me to realize that I have, indeed, done wonderful things in my life, and that this is a new beginning… A new place… A new earth.

Little Boy, Great Voice

Published by Bea under Media

David Archuleta is definitely my favourite contestant in American Idol this season. He’s young, extremely cute (I want to pinch those cheeks!), he has an amazing voice, and he sings with no effort.

Things that are making me happy today

Published by Bea under Weblog

  • John finally agreed to clean up his closet. He had way too many clothes he doesn’t use, and now I have two full bags of decent stuff to donate to good will.
  • We got surprise tickets for Matchbox 20’s concert tonight at the Sprint Center, and Alanis Morissette is opening the show. Can you say awesome?
  • I got my Green Card (which is really white) in the mail after only a week of being approved for residence. I also received my bank Visa check card. :-)
  • When looking at the price for the Smithsonian Magazine subscription ($119), I can’t help but feel proud of having grabbed an offer at the right time, and I only had to pay $12 for full membership.

    Published by Bea under Memes

Today’s Friday’s Feast brought to you by iTunes.

    Appetizer
Have you ever played a practical joke on anyone?
Yes, I have. As a revenge for my roomie who made me believe his leg was hurting a big deal. I hid his laptop in one of his bags, and didn’t tell him where it was for a whole day. I came clean when he said he was going to call the police and report a guy he knew.

    Soup
What do your salt and pepper shakers look like?
Salt shaker looks like any regular shaker made of glass with a metal cap. The pepper shaker looks like any regular crusher/shaker made of wood.

    Salad
Where is the next place you plan to visit (on vacation or business)?
Colombia! So my husband can finally meet my family, and I can meet his!

    Main Course
What kind of lotion or cream do you use to keep your hands from getting too dry?
I have St. Yves collagen and Eucerin calming cream. I have to keep my skin moist because my thyroid makes it crack.

    Dessert
Make up a dessert, tell us its ingredients, and give it a name.
Who do you think I am? Anna Olson? Pffft!

Making Your Bed, Making Your Day

Published by Bea under Life, Thoughts

My mother has always been a freak about making her bed. My father was like that, as well. That bed was made and nice as soon as they got up (early, always early). When my brothers and I were old enough to do it, she was always nagging about it. Sometimes I went to school without making my bed, and I had to hear a whole discourse about it when I got back. I think we got at it more often than not; I just couldn’t understand what the big deal was about. But I think it rubbed in and now, as an adult, I tend to be more like my mother and do things the way she taught me to, or to copy her style.

I’m sure I’m not the only person talking about this. But since I’ve been reading so many self-improvement weblogs, I wasn’t surprised when I read that making your bed as soon as you get up may actually help you to have a very good start of your day. It’s a simple task that doesn’t require a lot of time, but will give you a sense of accomplishment. Some people would argue “Why make the bed if you’re going to mess it up again in the evening?” - Well, you’re not going to give up some things in life because you’ll eventually die, right? That’s the principle.

And it’s not only about the bed. It’s all about all those little pesky tasks that we have to take care of (almost) every day. Call it unloading the dish washer, folding laundry, etc. We let it pile up, we don’t want to sacrifice some minutes of a busy day for it. Most of the time we’re just lazy about it. I know I am. That is why I decided that I’m going to do all these things early in the morning, so I can use the rest of my day for other things without having to worry.

It’s a simple philosophy of mine: If I don’t do the small things, how will I do the big ones? When it comes to having my house organized, I think I do a pretty good job. I may slack at times, but a messy house will always bring me down.

    Disgusting Art

    Published by Bea under Media

Outrageous. Some idiot called Guillermo Habacuc Vargas thinks mistreating a dog and letting it die of hunger is a form of art. And here I was thinking Bodies Revealed was disgusting. This beats it a million times. Sick world… SICK!

The artist captured and then let the dog die of hunger with the “art” excuse. The piece, apparently called “A Sick Street Dog” was made in order to show exactly that. The dog was denied food and medical attention, and was displayed to the public. According to a witness, the dog was chased in Managua (Nicaragua), and 5 kids who helped received money. During the exhibition, some people asked for the dog to be freed, but the artist refused. Its name was Natividad.

It makes me think of “The Dead of Right and Wrong,” a book I read a few months ago. Everything has become relative, many things are allowed even if most people condemn them. Humankind has lost its sense of dignity and values.

    Water, NO lemon!

Published by Bea under Media, News

I’ve never been fond of soda, so water is always my choice at any place. John has decreased his soda intake, and he’s ordering water, too. We order lemon with it. After watching this video, I think I’m going to stick to ONLY water… Eeek!
