Bodies Revealed Controversy

In my first year of college, I took human anatomy and physiology classes. Being a Catholic university, a mass was held at the beginning of the semester to pray for the soul of the people whose corpses we were working on. Mind you, these bodies belonged to John Doe’s, victims of violence, probably without a family, bums… The possibilities are endless. It was rather sad, but that’s the way things work(ed) in Colombia. Universities go to the morgues to get what they need if bodies don’t get claimed after a while, and they are cleared by the coroner’s office. So you never know…

I remember I once thought “It would be cool to donate my body to science one day.” (although I prefer organ donation for a good cause much better) – And yes, I still think I would do it. For SCIENCE, but I wonder how my family and other loved ones would feel knowing that the shell that held what I was in this life is being sliced, poked and whatever else students do. And believe me, we tend to get cruel. At the end of the semester there isn’t much left of those bodies. And then there is Bodies Revealed

Leaving Facebook?

Last week, I got interested in an article on The New York Times about How Sticky is Membership on Facebook, stating that “…while the web site offers users the option to deactivate their accounts, Facebook servers keep copies of the information in those accounts indefinitely. Indeed, many users who have contacted Facebook to request that their accounts be deleted have not succeeded in erasing their records from the network.” – They compared it to Hotel California… Kind of creepy, that song is not my cup of tea.

Today, on Read Write Web, I read that “Facebook modified its help pages to instruct users that permanent account deletion could be requested by contacting the company. ” – I for one am not thinking about deleting my Facebook account, but I do hate it when you cannot completely remove your information from a website. I think if you decide to join, you should be free to remove yourself without hassles. In a perfect world, of course…

Jumper

jumper.png

I wasn’t too excited about this movie, but it sounded like a good plan for a Valentine’s Day my husband and I don’t celebrate for cultural reasons. I went to the theatre with no expectations, and came out feeling like I had been vegging for the last 2 hours. No, Jumper is not a bad movie, but I wouldn’t put it in my favourite list.

I spent all the time trying to figure out the reasons why the kid suddenly jumps, for there isn’t really a story there. The reasons why jumpers are being hunted are obvious, for they can do whatever they want. However, the story in the movie was very spastic and I guess I’m not the only one who thought there was going to be some kind of superhero plot. It turns out, this kid doesn’t do anything good for humanity; instead he gets his girlfriend in trouble with a Samuel L. Jackson that wasted his talent in this movie.

The action is good, I suppose. And at the end of the movie I was left with the feeling that I needed a sequel to see what this kid can really do with a power. I just don’t know if I would pay to see the same kind of movie again.

(And I’m being generous)

Posting good news

I have to get used to post here more often. I’m not very good at reporting health related issues, especially personal ones. But that was the idea of this weblog, and I will stick to it. Taking care of 4+ weblogs kinda makes me lose track. But I have good news… really good news!

I went to see my endo last week after blood work. My A1C went down from 7.2% to 6.2% (still to improve, but much better!), my thyroid levels are NORMAL for the first time in months, and I’ve lost 10 pounds since November. The doctor was rather happy, she gave me high 5, and reminded me to exercise more often. That’s where I run into trouble, but I’m getting there.

I’m eating much smaller portions these days and I’m rather surprised. I didn’t set my mind on it, but somehow my body is getting used to it. I think I’m nourishing myself properly without getting sick. I’m also choosing salads over potatoes with no problem, and taking my meds with an amazing discipline.

If I continue like this, the doctor says I can work on getting pregnant in a year. :) I’m happy!
