I guess we haven’t talked in a while…

Funniest thing I heard from a friend when I told him I got married to a Colombian:

¡No puede ser! ¡No tenia ni idea! Y usted políglota, recorrida en este mundo, va y se casa con un paisano? No jodaaa!

It means:

It can’t be! I had no idea! You, a polyglot who has traveled the world, got married to a co-patriot? You’ve got to be kidding me!

I guess I haven’t talked to some friends in a while.

We lost our little Colombian corner

John and I had a rather stressful week. Both our jobs kept us crazy busy, and when Friday approached we planned to go to El Rincon Colombiano because the owner gave us a $30 coupon last time we went. John was excited about ordering a picada, and I was dreaming of empanadas con ají.

It all started to go down when we entered the restaurant and they were playing Nortena, a type of Mexican music you certainly don’t listen to in Colombia. And then the bells starting ringing when we saw posters on the window about their serving flautas, tacos, sopes and other Mexican dishes. Then we looked at the back of the menu… And yes, lots of Mexican food.

So we ordered our drinks, and John had the good idea of showing the coupon to the waitress. The cook came to see us and told us she could not accept the coupon, and that the owner wasn’t there to help us. I decided we had had enough of Nortena and weirdness, and told John to leave. As soon as we were out, we called one of our Colombian acquaintances, and he confirmed our horrible fears: Our Colombian restaurant has been sold. And they are now putting Mexican food on the menu.

The way I see it, Colombian food will be no more at the place. As if KC needs another Mexican restaurant… We left feeling robbed of the only place that felt like home away from home. I guess we will have to get frozen goodies from the Colombian shop in Argentine. But I personally feel like an orphan now.

And somebody has to tell those people to stop using our flag and typical decorations in vain. I am irritated!
