I know it’s really silly, but one of my pet peeves is people who don’t use capital letters and use them properly. Like those who don’t write their own name using a capital letter at the beginning. My name is Beatriz Dominguez, because that’s the way the rules are (and I have to learn some of that too). But even more pet peevish is receiving an e-mail from someone who doesn’t know how to fill the “From” field with their proper name using these simply to type capital letters… Ugh! I know, silly. Why can’t everyone have a decent “From” field? Ok, freaky Beatriz, go get ready.
Summary of Capital Letters:

– The name of a nationality or an ethnic group
– A proper name
– The name of a historical period
– The name of a holiday
– A significant religious term
– The first word, and each significant word, of a title
– The first word of a direct quotation which is a sentence
– A brand name
– A Roman numeral
– The pronoun I
Bea, you touched upon one of my pet peeves too. I receive numerous emails on a daily basis from so-called writers trying to impress me, all looking for an agent to represent them, who neither seem to know rudimentary English or have any grasp of basic spelling.
The only impression they leave is a bad one.
I totally agree! :loveya:
Thank you, thank you, thank you … I am not alone! I have some weird writing habits, but capitalization is not one of them. It drives me NUTS when people send me emails that are all lower case. Also, there are websites out there that are all lower case … aarhhhghgh! It hurts my eyes!!!
Tee-hee! I’m the same way.
And then there is me who uses too many capital letter to Emphasize things I want to say and then my DH harasses me cuz I don’t do it right
I’m a grammar freak too :thumb:
I also have to own up to being a spelling freak.
I love my language. I think when written correctly it’s like an art form
ok, i am being a pest !!
i am the worst at this in emails and IMing though. its not often i get to read that i am someone’s petpeeve so i thought i would take a second to enjoy it!
BUT — at least I do write with proper caps in my websites and any “real” email thats beyond 5 or 6 words if that helps put me back on your good person list
I don’t think it’s too much to expect people to be able to manage the basic rules of grammar, spelling and capitalization, particularly in their native language. (I realize English is not Bea’s native language, so double-plus-good for her)
We all commit typos, so those are forgivable, but if I see one more person type “u” for “you”, I’m gonna plotz. And don’t even get me started on “leet speak”.
I’m an offender in this situation. In emails to other people, mainly informal, I will not use capitals. I this mainly because I’m in a hurry :) But when I compose something to a stranger, I try to dot all my i’s and cross all my t’s. I think it just depends on who it is your writting to.
Ah! He he he! Then I’m not alone. This post was basically about people who don’t use Capitals in their names. C’mon! That’s like the most basic rule, the first I learned: “Proper names are written with capitals at the beginning”.
As for spelling, we all make mistakes and there are those who are dyslexic. But just a little capital in our names?? That’s not too difficult. When I’m chatting sometimes I forget to put capitals, but that’s not what I’m talking about. It’s the “From” field in the e-mails. After all, they are you presentation card.
I’m one of the people who usually types/writes their name without a capital. I don’t think that all people who do that are lazy or don’t care about the way they write.
I use a small ‘a’ for my first name because I think it looks better. I hate the look of a capital ‘A’. My name looks more balanced as ‘alysha’. It’s nutty and not proper, but it is my preference. I use a capital in formal mail, but not personal.
My pet peeves are concerned with the use of certain words like ‘Beaut’. Gah, I hate that word! I also cannot stand it when people spell words differently like ‘kool’ or use hip hop (or whatever it’s called) slang. Now that really annoys me! ;p
I taught grammar. I want to go back for my PhD in Rhetoric.
I love the English language. AND I spell my name with a lowercase e.
Because I can. Because it’s MY name, and I like it better as erika-renee. It’s not because it’s artistic or I’m trying to impress anyone. It’s because it’s MY name, and I like it that way.
I flip-flop between using caps and going without. I think it depends on my mood. For example, if I have a lot to say and am emotional about it, I will write without caps. I dont even think about it. When I take the time to compose something, caps are there in all their glory. As for my name, I too like it better with a small k, it’s the way that I choose to spell my name online.
I guess I like my fat B  It’s nice to learn people’s options. But still, capitalizing is one of my pet peeves… LOL! Cannot help it. We all have them.
