I don’t care about 5 de Mayo

And no, I am not being rude. But when people ask me what the holiday is about, I say I have no idea. And I don’t. It kind of bothers me, to be honest. The same way it bothers me when people ask me if I speak “Mexican” or “Colombian” — I speak neither, I speak Spanish.

Now go and drink your margaritas and leave me alone; it’s Monday! FYI, Mexico’s big national holiday is September 16th.

  1. Clearly you’ve never been to Sonoma County on Cinco de Mayo. It’s a HUGE thing here, among the large Mexican community.

  2. I think 5 de Mayo is for Mexicans in the U.S. to celebrate their heritage. It is actually the Battle of Puebla, and people from that Mexican state do celebrate. It isn’t such a big deal in the rest of Mexico.

I was mostly being bitchy because I don’t like to be put in the same basket with everyone. I really wish some people learnt more about other cultures.

  3. I think if my parents knew that may 5th would become national tequila day, they would have gotten married on the 6th.

  5. Nothing you don’t already know. =D

Just found it ironic that you mention you don’t know about Cinco de Mayo then say you wish others would learn more about other cultures. I wish I knew more about a ton of other cultures but time is short for learning it all or even a sliver of the diverse cultures. I’m still learning about mine…

  6. At least I went and Google it to give a proper answer to the question, even if it was a day late. :-P

  7. I have to stick with my wife on this one Wook… I don’t think the “made up” Cinco the Mayo celebrated with “Burritos” (which are not Mexican) and Margaritas are really representative of Mexican culture. You should know homey, how many times do you get called Mexican or someone make a dumb reservation joke when they find out you are truly native? ;)
