Scene from “Friends”

There is an episode of “Friends” where Rachel tries to mingle with her new boss and assistant at all costs. They both smoke, so Rachel puts up with the fact that she doesn’t, and gets into the habit just so she won’t feel left out. They are talking about work during smoke-breaks, and she doesn’t want to miss a thing. I thought about this episode recently.

Most of my work team-mates are smokers, and they go religiously out at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to get their nicotine fix in the back of the building. The non-smokers? We go potty, get coffee, check personal e-mails, etc. But yesterday I had to work, and my co-workers went out for a break and told me to go with them so I wouldn’t stay alone.

Do you know how difficult it is for an ex-smoker to be offered a cigarette and say no? VERY! At least it is for me. Sometimes, when I’m in a bar with people smoking around me, I think I’m going to go crazy. I can say cigarette smoke bothers me most of the time, but there are times when I really want one. Of course I just say NO to myself and forget about it. But it was hard yesterday, and I could’ve just accepted one, but who would I be cheating on but myself, right?

  1. I used to smoke but now I just think it stinks (not the habit, the smell). If more than one person smokes, my throat dries up and I try to escape as soon as I can. Once in a while I think it would be neat to smoke a cigarette but I know I will not enjoy the first one, like I didn’t when I started smoking the first time around.

  3. I only smoked for a short time in the service. Coffee and cigerettes could help get you thru. Thank goodness it didn’t stick.

Once in a great while, I do kind of want a cigar (Macanudo), when I have been drinking. However, it’s never while I am in a smoky bar. When I am around a bunch of smokers, I want nothing to do with it.
