Tar Angel

L'Ange de goudron (Tar Angel): Great movie. I didn't really plan to watch it, but found myself sleepless in the middle of the night and when I turned my TV on and started the "zapping" you have to do at 1 in the morning to find something decent, it was playing on The Movie Network. I missed the first 30 minutes, but got hooked to the heartbreaking story immediately when I saw it was about Algerian immigrants wanting to become Canadian citizens (I'm a Permanent Resident applying for the Citizenship soon).

Tar Angel is the kind of movie that makes you go from one side to another in the blink of an eye. First you get angry seeing how immigrants are sometimes treated by the immigrations agents and bureaucrats, and then you start thinking how can a kid just jeopardize the well being of the family after having the possibility of a better life in a country like Canada? I started thinking "God! Are they really that cruel?" when I saw the images of the family at the immigration offices. It made me hold some respect for the hundreds of thousands of immigrants in Canada that have to go through so much shit, but then I thought the movie can also exaggerate a little to make the story more dramatic.

In any case, I liked it very much and I recommend it if you're interested in Canuck cinema. That's why I love The Movie Network, you get to see wonderful productions that are totally out of the $ Hollywood $ scheme, providing thought-provoking stories.
