The Things We Take for Granted

When I signed up for different job-searching websites and I started sending resumes, I thought it was going to take a little while for me to get hired. It happened sooner than later, I got an offer from a company that has a lot of potential, and which is only 10 minutes from home. I went to a few interviews that turned out to be really interesting, and that taught me more things about myself. I also, for the first time in my life, had to decline an offer.

One of the things that catches my attention about job applications (or any kind of application for that matter) is when they ask if you have been convicted of a felony, if you’re on parole, or if you have certain security restrictions. And while I just have to check the NO box at ease, I know that is not the case for many people out there. It makes me think because I always go like “What? Me? Never!” And then I realize that I’ve been lucky to have grown up in an environment where I haven’t had to struggle against social injustice. In fact, I have been able to live my life in a way where I got the qualifications I need for a decent job. Sometimes I just have to stop and take the time to appreciate what I have.

Saying that I’m excited and grateful about my new job would be an understatement. But it wasn’t only me… It was my surroundings, the people I have giving me support, the fact that my husband believes in me and knew I would get a job in no time. There are also my mother’s prayers and the good wishes of every single person who knew I was job hunting. Some others aren’t so lucky, and no single day goes by without my thinking how I can make a difference.

  1. I think it’s illegal to discriminate based on these entries, unless you need some kind of clearance but then the rules will be spelled out on the ad.congrats on your new job, do I get a discount?

  2. I suppose there are clearance cases, but I’m not familiar with the recruiting process when it comes with a history of felony. My post was focused on something else.

As for a discount, are you a diabetic? ;-)
