Winter Coats Galore

I want to ask my readers something because I need to know if I’m totally insane or if it’s normal to have more than 4 winter coats. You see, I love those thingies and I’m always lusting over the nice ones I see around, but I know I just can’t buy too many because 1) they take too much space and 2) I think it’s stupid to have too many. But how many is too many?

After 4 years I still don’t have the proper knowledge to buy good winter coats and always end up buying something that’s either too thick or too cheap. The thick ones won’t do during fall or spring and the cheap ones are… well, cheap. I’m too much my father’s daughter always telling me “If you go for the cheap stuff you’ll always end up paying more”, and it’s true, they break easily so I have to get new ones.

Last month I found this really nice red coat a Sears and didn’t hesitate and got it right away. But I knew it was another thick and hot coat and I knew I still had to find a light one for fall so I’ve been looking. They have these 3 in 1 coats, really cool, I’m sure you know how they work, and I finally decided to buy one yesterday because they were on special. It’s nice, light blue and sporty, but then this morning I decided to take a closer look to the red one and found out it’s a 3 in 1… geez! I called the store and told them I’m going to change it for something else today. After all, I do need clothes for work.

How many coats I have, you must be wondering? A green long one for super-cold days. A nice cashmere one that I only wear during the holidays when we’re meeting friends and family. A navy blue sporty one that I wear on a regular basis during the winter months. A kind of plastic (that’s what I decided it’s made of) charcoal one that I wear when I need to be not-so-sporty. And now I have the red one too. That makes 5, not counting the one I have in a bag to give to charity because I don’t use it and is still in good condition.

Do you think I’m crazy yet? How many winter coats are there in your closet?

i used to have 4 coats in my closet when i was living up in boston. but ever since i moved home to singapore and now to the south (georgia), i have 2. i don’t think you have it bad yet, your coat fetish ;)

I have about four coats as well, and live in the South, where there is no such thing as winter. We have ice one day a year, and that is all.
So, no, I think that you have too few coats, and my permission to go out an buy that beautiful burgundy you have been ogling lately.

I used to have one, but I gave it away when I moved to Los Angeles. If you had 10 - 20 then you might be in trouble.

I only own two coats — one heavy winter one from when I lived in New Mexico, and a lighter one for chilly days. Since I live in Los Angeles now, I rarely have an occasion to wear a heavy coat. I think in your climate, 3-4 coats is fine. :)

I don’t think you’re crazy! I used to have like…8 (holy cow) coats, but got rid of some of them (and many, many other things) when I moved to AK. Now I have a shell coat with two liners (one down, one fleece,) a raincoat, a nice wool coat for dress-up occasions (not many of those here) and an extra old coat to keep in the car for emergencies. Still a lot, but I do live in Alaska.

Anyway, I don’t think 4 is too many. Don’t go broke buying coats, but they’re certainly much more useful than many other things you could be spending your money on.

This coming winter will be the 9th for my coat. I own one, but sometimes I wear my mom’s…

You live in a climate where it’s cold, so I don’t think four is excessive at all. I think I also have four…I can’t remember!

no of course you’re not insane ;) I am because my mother had to buy me a coat this year for winter!! admittedly though montreal is way colder than winter in auckland, nz…. although lately i think we’ve been going through a second winter as it’s so damn cold.

I don’t even want to count! If you don’t include the fleece “jackets” (which I must have about 5, I have one VERY long black coat for church and dress up events, one black wool coat-jacket (that desperately needs to be retired but I can’t find one as versatile), rain coats (I live in Germany), and some light jacket-coats. NOw I am worried I amy have a problem–ha ha. Ingorance WAS bliss.

You’re certainly not crazy. I know many women (my wife included) who have like 4 coats for winter and 4 coats for fall/spring, and are still claiming not to have enough coats.

Not that it freaks me out or anything.
